Linux. Why?

Here's a fun fact you probably didn't know: Every computer I own runs on Linux. For the most part, this has been a taste and practicality issue, but as the years go by, Linux is getting more and more accessible to everyone. In this article, I aim to highlight a few reasons why you, the reader, should use Linux. To most people, the idea that there are multiple options for choosing an operating system seems foreign, and that's completely understandable. Some people (my parents included) don't even know what an operating system is. For that reason, I am going to try not to get too technical in this article. I'm also going to be comparing Linux to Windows pretty extensively, so, Windows users, feel free to shout at me. Money This might come as a surprise to most people, but Linux is completely free. I'm serious! So many times people have asked me to get them Windows for free since it costs about $200 (The exact price as I'm writing this is $199 for Windows 10 Pr...

All about stocks

So, you've heard some of your friends talking about how the price of some stock fell 30% in one day and how it's the end of the world. You don't tell them this, but you have no idea what the stock market is, or why anyone cares about it. Well, then, this article is for you. DISCLAIMER:  This article does not constitute financial advice. It is purely meant for educational purposes. Anything stated in this article, fact or not, is the author's opinion. The author disclaims any and all responsibility for damage or loss incurred as a result of this article. What are stocks? The first thing one might ask is, what exactly are they? Well, essentially, owning a stock means owning a fraction of a business. Company owners will split up the ownership of a company into parts. In most cases, several million parts. These parts or, "shares", are then traded on the stock market. You might ask, "why would companies sell parts of their company to the public?" The answ...

It's Elementary

Okay, so... Here's something that really  grinds my gears. I find myself debating with people quite a lot in general. It usually leads to an argument of sorts since I try to get my point across in a formal way, yet whomever I'm arguing with doesn't respect the rules of debate. In this article, I aim to lay the foundations of what I consider to be good practice for a casual debate. Note that I will be using the words "debate" and "argument" interchangeably in this article to refer to debate. Problem #1: Logical fallacies This is a universal problem in debating and does not only hold true when arguing among friends or peers. It is extremely important for a debater to know and acknowledge the rules of Formal Logic. If not fully applied, it is at least advisable to know the common pitfalls of logical arguments. First, let me define what I mean by a logical argument: A logical argument is a set of logical statements that are grouped together and use...

Introduction

Hi! My name is Jaco. I am a student, currently studying Computer Science, at a generic University in South Africa. At this moment, I am choosing not to say which one, partly for selfish reasons and partly because I might say something that I don't want my University's name attached to. Now, let's get into the meat of things... This blog is going to be, completely, 100% my opinion. I will be discussing some, maybe, controversial topics that I am interested in and think there is a lot of misconception about. Now, if you don't agree with something I say and would like to shout at me, or if you just want to tell me about that movie you watched and you really want me to tell the world about it, you are welcome to email me. I am going to try and post at least once a month, but in times that I am busy or writing exams, I might "forget" to write an article. If this is the case, don't shout at me unless you know for   sure I am just being lazy (in which ca...
